How to Solve Homicide Crimes

Homicide rates in the U.S. represent a significant public health challenge. Homicide is a top ten leading cause of death in many groups in the U.S.

One method to reduce homicide rates is to quickly identify and arrest individuals who have committed homicide. This is due to the fact that individuals committing homicide have a high rate of future homicide.

A recent study from Michigan State University and Indiana University examined characteristics of U.S. police departments that have high rates of solving homicide crimes. The U.S. average homicide rate solving is 65%. In this study, cities had to have a homicide solve rate of at least 80%. The cities that met this high homicide solving rate included:
  • Baltimore, MD
  • Denver, CO
  • Houston, TX
  • Jacksonville, FL
  • Richmond, VA
  • Sacramento, CA
  • San Diego, CA

After analysis of a group of variables, the authors found that highly success police departments in homicide demonstrated the following characteristics:
  • High collaboration with community and federal agencies (FBI and DEA)
  • Adoption of modern forensic tools including digital forensics and crime analysis
  • Investigators who were able to integrate networks of information including online sources

It would also be interesting to examine the influence of training as well as staffing and dollars spent on police departments in homicide solving rates.
