Apples have been mention in the bible, in the story of Adam and Eve. However, according to history, apples originated from Eastern Europe and southwestern Asia and is now found in almost all parts of the world. There are many varieties of apples on the planet; some are red, green, yellow or gold in colour. Apples can be stored for up to three months after harvesting.
Some of the nutrients found in apple include:
  • Fiber
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin B complex (vitamin B-6, riboflavin and thiamine)
  • Minerals like phosphorus, potassium and calcium

Below are some of the health benefits of eating apples.
1 Anti-cancer
Studies have shown that among other fruits, apples are able to reduce the risk of lung cancer. Some preliminary studies also show that apples can prevent other forms of cancer such as colon and breast cancer. More studies are being conducted to determine the exact compounds in apples that lower the risk of occurrence of lung cancer although credit it given to its anti-oxidant properties.

2 Regulation of blood glucose levels
Apples contain polyphenols that stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin. This insulin helps lowering sugars that are found in blood. Polyphenols also slow down the rate at which glucose is being absorbed in our digestive tract. This helps to bring down high levels of sugars in blood and keep our blood glucose levels normal.

3 Decreased risk of asthma attacks
Eating apples has been associated with a decreased risk of asthma attacks in asthma patients. This has been associated with the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of apples. This can be achieved when one consumes one whole apple daily.

4 Reduced cholesterol levels
The polyphenol and pectin (water soluble fiber) component of apples are able to aid in the lowering of low density lipoproteins (LDL) levels in blood.

5 Reduced risk of stroke
Eating apples has been associated with a reduced risk of stroke attacks.

6 Apples improve brain health
Apples protect brain cells against neurotoxicity. Apples are also able reduce the risk of neuro-degenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.

7 Apples keeps you full and can aid in weight loss
Eating apples makes one stay full. A successful weight loss strategy is to eat foods high in fibre.  There are many diseases that come as a result of being overweight such as hypertension, diabetes and stroke. It is therefore important to eat foods that help in preventing these diseases.

It is very important to wash apples before consuming. If you are buying inorganic apples it has to be washed too because chemicals (wax) are being used to protect the surface of the apples before shipping and transportation. People who want to avoid pesticide related health problems should consider buying apples that were grown organically.
